BUYING A BICYCLE HELMET - QUALITY IS DECISIVE

The willingness to wear a helmet when cycling has fortunately increased in recent years. To ensure that your head is really protected, the helmet must be perfectly adapted to you and of good quality. When buying a helmet, do not tolerate squeezing and pinching and choose the size carefully. Find out how to find the right bike helmet here.

BIKE HELMETS: SIZE AND FIT

Just like clothing, cycle helmets are usually labelled in sizes XS to XL. For better orientation, the range of the head circumference of the respective size is also indicated in centimetres. To determine the circumference, place a tape measure slightly above the ears and run it around the head to the starting point. At the forehead, place the tape measure on the part that sticks out the farthest. Make sure that the tape does not slip down the back of the neck, but always remains at the level of the ears. To ensure that the helmet fits perfectly, it should not sit too low on the neck and should form a horizontal line to the head. To adapt it to the individual head shape, the helmet can be adjusted at the back of the head and under the chin. The strap should be tight enough to leave a finger's width of space under the chin.

SAFE CYCLING HELMETS: TEST AND INSPECTION SEALS

There is a simple test to check whether the helmet fits snugly: pull it far into your forehead so that you still have a clear view and then undo the strap. If the helmet stays on your head when you shake it vigorously and jerkily, then it has passed the test. Your helmet should also have been tested by the manufacturer. If it has the CE mark, it meets the safety requirements of the relevant EC directives. The GS mark shows that the helmet has passed the crash test carried out by the TÜV.

WHAT YOUR CYCLING HELMET MUST HAVE

It is a misconception that a heavy helmet protects better than a light one. A helmet weighing up to 300 grams is perfect. Reflectors or LED lights on the helmet are especially important for children, but also for adults. This way you are safe even in twilight and darkness and will not be overlooked. Since you shouldn't wear a normal cap under your helmet, there are special helmet caps, including ear flaps, that keep you warm in winter. An umbrella is also impractical; instead, a rain bonnet prevents water from getting through the slits.
