At the end of June 2020, a new model of what is probably the fastest ASICS marathon running shoes of all time launched on the market: the ASICS Metaracer. We were adding the running shoes to our product range for launch. Here we want to introduce the shoes to you in detail. How is the ASICS Metaracer constructed?
All information about the marathon shoes you can get here. Furthermore, our Keller Sports Running Pro Jan Lau has tested the running shoes for you in detail. He laced up and ran the ASICS running shoes. In his test report he explains how the ASICS Metaracer runs and for which units it is best suited.
The structure of the ASICS Metaracer running shoes
We find that you can tell that the ASICS Metaracer running shoes are designed for speed from the very first glance. Maybe it is because of the curved sole, the thin upper or the garish colour. But let's take a closer look at the new running shoes to understand what makes the ASICS Metaracer so special. We work our way from bottom to top.
Even the underside of the new running shoes provides a little surprise. The outsole has a relatively smooth looking profile. Only some thin lines go through the sole. But the smooth impression is deceptive. The outsole is designed with ASICS Wet Grip Rubber Technology. The rubber compound gives the shoes an excellent grip, even in rain and wet roads.
The grooves work similarly to a car tyre, while at the same time ensuring that the tread is somewhat softer and more cushioned. Another advantage of the construction of the outsole of the ASICS Metaracer is that the tread pattern has saved a lot of weight.
The heart of the ASICS Metaracer, perhaps also of running shoes in general, is the midsole. The first thing you notice about the new running shoes is that they have the curved shape that you know from ASICS GluideRide or ASICS EvoRide.
The so-callede ASICS GuideSole technology consists of a stiffer area in the forefoot. This supports a dynamic rolling motion and reduces the load on the calves. This saves energy when running over longer distances and enables faster times.
The midsole material of the ASICS Metaracer is also already known from other models. The ASICS Flytefoam technology gives the runner a soft cushioning and an explosive impression with every step due to a light but also enormously reactive material. The reinforced fibres of the Flytefoam material spring you forward while running and push you to new best performances.
However, the greatest innovation in the ASICS Metaracer is invisibly built into the midsole: These are the first ASICS running shoes with a carbon fibre plate in the midsole. In recent years, running shoes with carbon fibre plates have won races in rows and thus proved their worth.
ASICS is now launching the Metaracer, the first running shoe with such a plate. The Carbon Plate runs from the metatarsus to the front of the foot to the toes. Like a spring, it supports the imprint from the ground and gives the running shoe additional stability.
The upper material
The upper of the ASICS Metaracer is a so-called Engineered Mesh. The very thin material was designed to be soft, comfortable but also strong. To achieve this, it was reinforced slightly at the points where it is most exposed to stress, but otherwise it was designed to be very air-permeable. This improves airflow, keeping your feet cool while running. Furthermore, the material does not absorb as much moisture, such as sweat, as others do. Thus the ASICS Metaracer remains a very light shoe even during long running sessions.
Another special feature is found at the foot of the ASICS Metaracer. ASICS has placed a small opening there, which on the one hand is intended to further improve ventilation, and on the other hand serves to allow moisture to escape from the shoe and keep the foot dry.
The ASICS Metaracer is being launched for men and women in a bright neon-orange colourway, official name is "Sunrise Red". The well-known ASICS Tiger Stripes are in plain black and under the ankle you can see the writing "Tokyo".
One reason for this is probably that the ASICS Metaracer was designed primarily for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. As is well known, the games had to be postponed by one year, to the summer of 2021, due to the corona virus from 2020. On the other hand, the Tokyo lettering reminds of the home of the Japanese brand ASICS.
How does the ASICS Metaracer perform?
With the Metaracer ASICS presents a completely new model for fast units and competitions. ASICS brings together established and new technologies in one running shoe, always with the focus on speed.
The bright upper in the Tokyo Edition sits very well on the foot with the Engieneered Mesh and above all can be laced very securely to the foot, giving a direct dynamic feeling. Sufficient breathability is provided by the thin uppers and a small opening at the tip of the running shoe.
The focus is, as so often with running shoes, on the midsole. The Flytefoam midsole material is processed in the familiar curved shape.
In addition, for the first time in ASICS running shoes, a carbon fibre plate sits in the forefoot, which in combination speaks for the high dynamics of the running shoe. And of course you can feel this when running, because the ASICS Metaracer wants to be further ahead with every step.
The rolling motion is guided by the construction to the middle or forefoot, so that a slower pace is not easily possible. I was very convinced by the outsole, which offers sufficient grip in all weather conditions.
Furthermore, the flex notch under the toes promotes a more comfortable roll at high pace. So you really "drill" yourself into the asphalt at high speed. The running shoe supports fast units wonderfully.
For which run is the ASICS Metaracer best suited?
Where is the right use of the ASICS Metaracer? That depends primarily on the runner, because the running shoe is geared to experienced runners. You need a certain stability when running and heel runners will not be able to cope with the fast running shoe with every unit.
For me it is an optimal running shoe for intervals or competitions up to half marathon. In terms of marathon use, the running shoe is recommended for all runners who can maintain a running style over the metatarsus even after many kilometres.
