With the second version of the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2, the brand with the swoosh has given its Carbon Racer an update. The changes are primarily in the upper of the running shoes. Nike has placed particular emphasis on wearing comfort.
How the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2 performs and how it differs from its predecessor was tested for you by Keller Sports Pro Jan.
The updates of the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2
First you have to take a look at the first edition, the Nike Vaporfly NEXT%. Here, Nike used the then newly developed Vaporweave upper. A thin material that does not absorb water. Despite its great flexibility, it was not the optimal material for many runners.
This was especially due to the fit, which was aimed at runners with narrower feet. In the new Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2, the brand now uses a mesh-like upper. It has a very minimalist finish and delivers better breathability than its predecessor. In addition, it is slightly more flexible.
In combination with the wider toe box, the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2 running shoes now offer enough space for wider feet. Stability has been improved with a rubberised element at the toes, giving you a good grip with the lacing. To reduce pressure on the instep, a corresponding pad has been incorporated into the tongue.
Has the running feel changed?
Since the midsole of the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2 has not changed, the running feel remains very identical to its predecessor. ZoomX and the carbon fibre plate in the midsole propel you as you run so the shoes are still an ideal choice for competition.
However, the upper feels a lot more comfortable - especially when it comes to the marathon distance, this can be exactly the decisive plus point. The mesh upper used in the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% 2 is very flexible and will therefore adapt better to swelling feet. The small padding in the tongue further improves comfort.
The Nike Zoom Vaporfly NEXT%2 is a successful update of the well-known competition shoe. The small updates to the upper increase comfort and the fit appeals to a broader target group. For me, it is still one of the best running shoes with a carbon fibre plate.
