Responsive technology: more power, faster regeneration

What is Responsive Technology? Basically, you can say that it reflects the energy emitted by your body during your activity. Responsive is a smart material technology based on far infrared radiation (FIR).

For this purpose, a mixture of naturally occurring, thermoactive minerals is used, which are applied to the fabrics as a print or directly incorporated into the synthetic fibres. In combination with the usual yarns, this creates intelligent hybrid materials that perfectly meet the respective requirements for mountain sports activities. The skin releases body heat through far-infrared radiation (FIR), among other things, and can also absorb this radiation again.

The minerals of the Responsive Technology are able to absorb this radiation. After about 20 minutes, the far-infrared radiation is emitted again. This creates a continuous flow of radiation. The FIR energy penetrates the skin and stimulates the blood circulation. In short, one can say that the emitted heat energy of the body is returned to the body. The effect lasts as long as one wears the clothing.

The mixture of natural minerals contained in Salewa Responsive absorbs the heat emitted by the body and converts it into infrared light.

The following benefits emerge from the manufacturer tests:

  • Longer distance: The performance could be increased by almost 6 %. Due to improved blood circulation and supportive effect, the testers run longer or perform the activities longer.
  • Better feeling due to 6.25% higher CO2 consumption. From this, one can conclude a higher oxygen flow in the body in connection with Responsive Technology.
  • Further distances: The test subjects were able to achieve over 5.6 % higher wattages with the Responsive technology and were also able to sustain them for longer.

Responsive technology is incorporated into the Alpine Wool-Responsive, Tirolwool-Responsive, Polarlite-Responsive and Responsibly Sourced Down-Responsive materials.

Salewa Responsive in the Outdoor Test

The theory behind Salewa's new technology sounds very interesting and can bring some advantages on the mountain. But how does Salewa Responsive perform in the practical test and can you feel the difference of the far-infrared radiation?

The Salewa Responsive jackets and shirts make you ready for every mountain tour and other outdoor activities 2020

The Salewa Zebru Responive shirt in the test

The new baselayer from Salewa is one of the first shirts with the new Responsive technology. The outdoor shirt consists of 64% merino wool and is made in Italy. The wool is very soft and comfortable to wear on the skin. The shirt does not scratch when you first put it on and fits snugly on the body. The cut of the baselayer is rather tight overall, so that it fits like a second skin and ensures an optimal body climate.

I usually wear a size M - the same with this Salewa shirt. If you are otherwise between two sizes, you should go for a larger size. The great advantage of merino wool is its ability to adapt to the body climate. Sweat is drawn away from the body and transported to the outside. This allows the material to dry quickly and improve thermal performance.

Merino wool also has the property of absorbing less moisture, so that the outdoor shirt can also be worn on longer tours. Thanks to the optimised thermal regulation, the outdoor shirt is suitable for all intensive activities in cold weather in the mountains. Whether ski touring, trekking, mountaineering or fast tours - the Responsive shirt offers super comfort and protection on the mountain, especially in cold conditions.

The Salewa Sella Powertex Responsive hardshell jacket convinces in the Outdoor Test 2020 with functional technologies for strong equipment on the mountain

Salewa Sella Powertex Responsive Hardshell Jacket

As Salewa is constantly working on its products to provide its customers with reliable, robust and functional clothing for any adventure in the harsh mountain environment, the Sella Powertex Responsive jacket is also full of new technology. Here are the main features of this hardshell jacket.

Powertex Responsive Shell material

The three-layer laminate was specially developed for use in alpine terrain and for ski mountaineering. It is waterproof (water column: 20,000 mm), windproof, breathable (MVTR: 20,000 g/m²/24h) and, for the sake of the environment, is completely PFC-free. One of the most important features is that the material is also very comfortable to wear.

"Recycling" of far-infrared radiation (FIR)

The Sella Powertex Responsive jackets are also equipped with the new, innovative technology. The jacket is equipped with a thermoactive print, which, as described above, consists of a mixture of different minerals. These absorb the body's far infrared radiation (FIR) and continuously emit it back to the body.

This radiation penetrates the skin and stimulates the blood circulation, thus ensuring a better oxygen supply. This gives you the advantage of better performance, you recover faster and stay warm longer. This has been scientifically tested at the Politecnico di Torino and tried and tested by alpinists. This print lasts the life of the jacket and does not wear off.

Made for the mountains: My conclusion

Whether climbing, alpine touring or ski mountaineering, the athletic-fit cut of the jacket offers optimal freedom of movement. The ergonomically shaped sleeves and shoulders also prevent the hem from slipping and pulling upwards. The storm hood is cut to fit over a helmet and can be adjusted with one hand. The taped seams and Velcro adjustable cuffs ensure that rain and snow stay safely outside. To ensure that it doesn't get too hot inside the jacket, long zips all the way to the ends of the sleeves provide good ventilation.

The jacket also has a lot of storage space. There are two pockets in the front and a large chest pocket that is always accessible, even with a climbing harness and/or backpack. All outer pockets are equipped with a waterproof zip. On the inside there are two large pockets made of stretch material. The hem can also be adjusted with gloves by means of an elastic band, and a snow guard made of stretch material with a side snap closure protects you from wet and cold.

At 520 g (50/L), this waterproof, windproof, abrasion-resistant 3L shell jacket is a lightweight, reliable companion for anyone who wants to push their limits in challenging terrain.

Die Salewa outdoor jackets is very well made, only the main zip feels a little stiff. On the other hand, the zip is particularly robust and easy to operate even with thick gloves. I noticed the long back and the long sleeves, which protect you from wind and moisture. The cut is a little narrow, so it pays to try it on if you want to wear several layers underneath.

The details in neon colours and the modern colour selection make the hardshell jacket a stylish companion on the mountain. An all-round successful shell jacket with which you can start the ski touring season perfectly equipped. With the Salewa Sella Powertex Responsive jacket, there are no more excuses for bad weather.

Salewa Ortles Hybrid Tirolwool Responsive Jacket

Especially in activities where very intense phases are often followed by phases of low exertion, such as ski touring or mountaineering, there is a risk of cooling down quickly. The Salewa Ortles Hybrid Tirolwool Responsive Jacket is designed to keep sensitive body zones warm in cold conditions without overheating the body during strenuous phases. The Durastretch inserts ensure durable use in alpine terrain.

Warmth is provided by the insulation fabric specially developed by Salewa, which also features the thermoactive minerals. The minerals can store and reflect the heat energy released by the body. The TirolWool® Celliant® hybrid fabric consists of polyester fibres with wool from Tyrolean mountain sheep. TirolWool® Celliant® is waterproof, breathable and keeps you warm even when wet. The jacket also has an insulated, adjustable hood for extra protection.

The Salewa Ortles Hybrid Tirolwool Responsive Jacket is very light at 402 g (50/L) and can be stowed in your pocket to fit in any backpack. The jacket also has elasticated cuffs at the hem and sleeves. The front zip has a full-length windproof placket. Two outer pockets and a chest pocket with zips provide plenty of storage space. The ergonomic cut, with the shaped sleeves and the stretchy inserts ensure optimal freedom of movement. The material mix is elastic, soft and wind-resistant. In addition, the materials are [email protected] certified.

The Salewa Responsive technology combined with Tyrol Down Wool results in a functional outdoor gear in our test 2020

For me, the Ortles Hybrid jacket is the optimal insulation layer after fast, strenuous ascents, so that I can enjoy the happiness of the summit and the descent without getting chilled. In icy temperatures, the Ortles Hybrid is also suitable for the ascent.

My conclusion on the new Salewa Responsive outdoor clothing

Even though the increase in performance was not measurable for me as in the laboratory tests, both models provided optimal climate management and thus maximum performance during the mountain tour. This feature is the be-all and end-all for me when mountain climbing, because overheating or hypothermia put additional strain on the body and cost energy. During climbing passages I always had a good feeling of being able to act without restrictions, as both Salewa jackets offered me enough freedom of movement.

Such reliable products are indispensable for me when ski mountaineering or mountaineering, as I want to concentrate fully on the route and not have to worry about the material. With Responsive technology, Salewa has brought high-quality products to the market that actively support your body and take your performance to the next level. Get to know your limits and push yourself with the Salewa Responsive collection.

Optimal climate management and perfect performance on the mountain is delivered by the new Salewa Responsive Outdoor gear in our 2020 test.
